NEW ZELAND EARTHQUAKE: PICTURES

The earthquake struck 19 miles west of New Zeland's second largest city Christchurch, destroying buildings.

Shops were destroyed in the quake which had magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker declared a state of emergency, warning people  that aftershocks could cause masonry to fall from damaged buildings.

Residents look at collapsed buildings in the city, which is home to 400,000 people.

Some of the buildings caught fire after the quake struck.
